Allegation: In December 2019 the Simon Wiesenthal Center included German UN Ambassador Christoph Heusgen on its annual list of the year’s worst antisemitic and anti-Israel incidents. Jerusalem Post (Benjamin Weinthal) and other outlets reported the ranking (seventh in some German recaps). The Center’s stated grounds, as those reports and a contemporaneous United with Israel recap print them, included a Security Council formulation pairing “Israeli bulldozers” with “Hamas rockets,” and Germany’s UN voting record on Israel-related resolutions. The subject’s government answered on the record. The Times of Israel, 18 December 2019 (AP): Merkel defended Germany’s UN voting record on Israel after the Jewish group’s criticism. Der Spiegel and Focus reported the German government defense. State Secretary Andreas Michaelis called inclusion “a big mistake” and asked that Heusgen be removed; Weinthal reported in the Jerusalem Post (18 December 2019) that the Wiesenthal Center refused. Israel’s then-ambassador to Germany, Jeremy Issacharoff, called the accusation “completely inappropriate” (Jüdische Allgemeine). The German Foreign Office pointed to Heusgen’s record of supporting Israel’s security.
A Center list is not a court finding of antisemitism. A chancellor’s defense is not a court acquittal. Both belong on the page. This post does not invent a Heusgen confession or a criminal charge.
